Mis-Sold With Profit Bonds

With Profit Bonds are designed to be suitable for investors who require low risk or cautious investments. These bonds take a lump sum investment and place them in a range of different asset classes – from corporate bonds to commercial property and equities – which creates enough diversification to spread the risk for investors.

With Profit Bonds can provide a customer with an income or they can provide capital growth. Unlike other types of bonds, the value of the units purchased in With Profits Bonds won’t change on a daily basis. An annual bonus is added instead, depending on the performance of the underlying investments.

In good years, the bonus awarded may be less than the capital growth achieved, which allows the fund manager to keep some bonus in reserve. Sometimes this results in bonuses being added to the fund even if the bond didn’t perform well.

Cautious investors prefer this management approach, known as “smoothing”, because they don’t want to risk volatility in their investment.

Were you mis-sold a With Profit Bond?

With Profit Bonds may have been mis-sold if you weren’t made fully aware of the various charges and penalties that accompany them. If you received a penalty on your bond and weren’t informed, you may be able to pursue a claim for mis-sold With Profit Bonds compensation.

Some investors, for example, received a penalty on their With Profit Bond and weren’t informed. The penalty, known as a Market Value Reduction (MVR), was originally designed to ensure that all investors in the fund received a fair share of the value, and were applied during periods when performance was poor.

In another example, some investors were hit with a penalty for trying to get hold of their investment early. If you weren’t made aware that a penalty would be applied, you may have been misled to believe that you could take an annual income from your savings plan and cash it in whenever you wanted.
